Sir Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt FRS Cattle in a Wooded Landscape
An original early 19th-century watercolour painting, Sir Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt FRS, Cattle in a Wooded Landscape.
A vigorous pen and wash drawing showing cows on a wooded hillside, likely in Wales, by antiquarian, archaeologist, artist and traveller Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Baronet FRS (1758–1838). Hoare was a discerning patron as well as accomplished artist himself. He was especially fond of landscapes and was particularly energetic and industrious.
Richard Colt Hoare is remembered for his associations with the West Country: as third owner of the large Stourhead estate in Wiltshire, he added the Picture Gallery, which he filled with not only old master paintings but also with the works of contemporary artists—including providing early patronage for Turner. In 1786 he purchased Glastonbury Tor and funded the restoration of its church tower, and in 1798 he made the first recorded excavations at Stonehenge along with William Cunnington. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
