Thomas Bush Hardy RBA Fishing Luggers off Whitby, Yorkshire

An original 1883 watercolour painting, Thomas Bush Hardy RBA, Fishing Luggers off Whitby, Yorkshire.

An impressive, large, signed watercolour by highly regarded and sought-after marine artist Thomas Bush Hardy RBA (1842–1897).

The Whitby landscape is dominated by the activity of the fishing luggers close to shore, battling the swell, coming in to harbour with their catch. The vessels which fished the coasts off Whitby at this time were predominantly traditional Yorkshire cobles, suited to the rough shelving beaches in the area. Fishing inshore, for cod, ling, haddock, mackerel, crabs and lobsters, it was a dangerous occupation; vessels would return the same day due to lack of protection on board. The larger three-masted boat in the background is possibly a Whitby herring buss.

Hardy's view of Whitby is very close to that of J.M.W. Turner, reproduced as an engraving in his series 'Dr Broadley's Poems' (see Tate no. T05183).

In watercolour with white bodycolour.
