An original early 19th-century watercolour painting – Attrib. William Page, Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounion, Greece.
A fine drawing in brown wash attributed to William Page (1794–1872) showing a view towards the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion in Greece.
The Temple of Poseidon is a subject Page painted a number of times. This drawing is particularly striking for its picturesque composition—the silhouetted clifftop ruins, palm trees and boat are used as pictorial devices as much as they are a topographical study. The striking palm, curving in the foreground, is a motif used similarly by Page in a watercolour depicting 'Budrum and the Island of Cos' (Bonhams, 2 February 2011).
This drawing is one of an interesting collection of works by / attributed to William Page that we have for sale.
In brown wash on cream wove paper with partial watermark: 'B,E, 182[?]' (Bally, Ellen & Steart).
