This gorgeous watercolour is a rare example of the work of Erskine Edward Nicol (1868–1926), who had connections with 'The Glasgow Boys' and whose paintings recall the North African subjects of Scottish painter Arthur Melville (1855–1904).
Nicol was friends with the artist Edwin Alexander RSA RSW (1870–1926), who had travelled in Morocco with Joseph Crawhall (1861–1913). Alexander lived on a houseboat on the Nile for four years, and Nicol made two extended visits to Egypt with Alexander in 1892 and 1896.
