Claude Hayes RI ROI (1852–1922) captures the expansive horizontal striation of the fen landscape in this quietly expressive, wide-format watercolour. The foreground reed stems provide an exuberant contrast, bursting upward, with touches of blue, green and red bodycolour and scratching out.

Watercolour was Hayes's favourite medium, and he was influenced by the open air style of David Cox and Thomas Collier.
