Demolished in the 1950s-60s, Thoby Priory at Mountnessing in Essex was the birthplace of the solicitor and industrialist Charles Ranken Vickerman. Here the family home comes to life through the brush of Charles's wife, Jane Dorothy Harvey. In 1873, Vickerman founded the Bonvilles Court Coal & Iron Co. in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. In 1863 he bought Hean Castle at Saundersfoot, a mansion of red sandstone, which he rebuilt and greatly enlarged.
