Attrib. Solomon Alexander Hart Troubadour Gypsy with Lady
An original 1829 watercolour painting, Attrib. Solomon Alexander Hart, Troubadour Gypsy with Lady.
This interesting watercolour bears the signature 'S.A. Hart 1829' and resembles the work in watercolour of the British painter and engraver Solomon Alexander Hart RA (1806–1881). Hart was the first Jewish member of the Royal Academy in London and is considered the most important Jewish artist working in England in the 19th century.
Solomon Alexander was born in Plymouth, the son of Samuel Hart (fl. 1785–1830), a Jewish engraver and teacher of Hebrew. Solomon was the first Jew to enroll at the Royal Academy; in 1840 he was accepted as a member and in 1854, he was appointed a Professor at the Academy. Much of his work was Jewish-themed, but he also included elements of Italian art which he learnt in Florence. He regularly provided illustrations for periodicals such as The Athenaeum and The Jewish Chronicle.
