An original mid-19th-century watercolour painting, Charles James Lewis, A Voyage of Discovery.

This pretty small watercolour shows a cherubic boy setting sail in a makeshift boat with a mountainous horizon behind. Titled 'A Voyage of Discovery', the dramatic skies and landscape give the image a mythical, metaphorical air—the child, playful and courageous, setting sail on the sea of life.

We acquired this watercolour as part of our collection titled Armenia & Turkey in the Mid-19th-century: Watercolours from the Circle of Elijah Walton.

In watercolour with white bodycolour highlights.
