This small sketch in brown ink is by the celebrated horseman and horse painter Charles Loraine Smith (1751–1835), of Enderby Hall in Leicestershire. It depicts his 15-year-old son Loraine Loraine Smith (1784–1857) leading a horse and doffing his hat, and is decribed in the inscription as: 'first sketch of Loraine for [?]Fernclough. C.L.S. 1797'. There is some white bodycolour to the horse. On laid paper, backed on card. The date inscription is partially on the backing card so was added after the drawing was mounted.
