An original 1910s pen & ink drawing, G. Cervelli, The Card Players (Joueurs de cartes).
A fabulous comic drawing by French cartoonist and artist G. Cervelli (fl.1910–1920). Titled 'Joueurs de cartes', the image shows two gentlemen of the Ancien Régime enjoying a game of cards in a florid rococo setting. The drawing no doubt references the Card Players series by Paul Cézanne painted in the 1890s, which in their turn adapted a motif from 17th-century Dutch and French genre painting that often depicted card games with rowdy, drunken gamblers in taverns. Whilst Cézanne replaced the players with Provençal peasants, Cervelli translates the scene to the upper classes, indicating that they too are susceptible to pursuits of questionable morality.
On laid paper.
