Pastoral Landscapes 1850s: W. Allcot

This painting is one of a collection of works that we have for sale by W. Allcot, dating from around the 1850s. The collection comprises charming pastoral landscape views around the southeast of England, in particular rural Essex and Kent. It appears that W. Allcot was William Allcot, described as ‘gentleman’, born c.1800 at Portsea, Hampshire, and who moved to Tonbridge in Kent. A couple of the works are additionally inscribed ‘Nash’: William Allcot’s daughter Priscilla Eliza married a John Nash. Allcot’s appealing painting style consists of flat washes—made popular by the likes of Alexander Cozens and John Varley—which create crisp clarity of form, overlaid with dabs of colour or marks in graphite, to delineate detail.
