An original c.1880s lithograph print, John Nugent Fitch, Orchid Flower (Cattleya Velutina).
A beautiful lithograph, meticulously hand coloured in vivid gouache wash, by the British botanical illustrator and lithographer John Nugent Fitch (1840–1927).
This was plate 26 in The Orchid Album, a landmark work of eleven volumes published between 1872 and 1897, to which John Nugent Fitch contributed 528 plates.
Fitch was the nephew of botanical artist Walter Hood Fitch (1817–1892). Best known for The Orchid Album, he also contributed to Curtis's Botanical Magazine from 1878, joining a select group of illustrators such as William Kilburn, James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards, William Jackson Hooker and Walter Hood Fitch. He was also employed by Trevor Lawrence to paint pictures of his orchids. In 1877 he was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society.
