As such, he contributed to the arts of naval victory, despite Smirke himself making no secret of his own democratic opinions. This design features a number of cameo portraits and bears the motto 'splendor septentriones,' which can mean 'the splendour of the seven stars' or 'the splendour of the North’. Allegorical figures from classical antiquity are used to give the design stature and gravitas—with Athena or Minerva (goddess of wisdom, craft, and war) to the right and Asclepius (hero and god of medicine) to the left, and possibly Marcus Aurelius on horseback in the centre. This design is very similar to other commemorative plates by Smirke dating from 1803, such as his famous ‘The Victory of the Nile’ (National Portrait Gallery, London), engraved by John Landseer, which features medallion portraits of Lord Nelson and his fourteen naval captains, flanked by allegorical figures of Fame and Nile—in tribute to Nelson's victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.This beautiful study has a sensitivity and charm which is lost in the more grand and formal finished, engraved plates.

This is one of two drawings by Smirke that we have for sale, which we acquired as a pair.

Kenneth E. It appears to be a set design, with the accompanying title 'The Proud Princesses'; this possibly is a version of the traditional fairytale known as The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

The painting is in the vein of various artist-designer-illustrators who turned their hand to theatre set design in the opening decades of the 20th century. In particular it bears similarity to the work of Frederick Cayley Robinson ARA RWS (1862–1927), who repeatedly utilised motifs such as girls or young women dancing in a ring, moonlight and cypress trees. Robinson was influenced by the Edward Burne-Jones and Pre-Raphaelite movement, and the works of the French symbolist painter, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes; here the princesses adopt a medievalism redolent of Pre-Raphaelitism as well as a dreamlike classicism evocative of the robed maidens of Puvis de Chavannes. The upright linearity of the composition, and its symmetry, are also features of Robinson's designs.

Frederick Cayley Robinson produced designs for Maurice Maeterlinck's 'fairy play', The Blue Bird—described as a 'transcendental pantomime' or 'philosophical Peter Pan'—which premiered at the Haymarket Theatre in December 1909. The play and its publication were an immediate success and it was re-issued in 1911 with illustrations by Robinson. Whilst the present design is not amongst Robinson's published illustrations for this, the motifs and structure of the painting, including the title section originally positioned below, bear striking similarity to them.

In gouache and wash on cream wove paper.

The paper is accompanied by (but detached from) its original card backing. Within a sheet of just 13 x 10.5cm (5 x 4"), Westall assembles nine finely modelled figures, centred around the dramatic encounter of Paul the Apostle with a venomous snake. The composition achieves a fullness of effect despite its small size, with the dramatic juxtaposition of light and dark, foreground detail and background atmosphere.

Westall is known for his historical, literary and biblical subjects; the story of Paul and the Snake is told in Acts 28 of the New Testament, recounting Paul's journey from his arrival in Malta to finally settling in Italy. Here, on the shore in Malta, the people of the island build a fire to welcome him, but a snake is forced out by the fire and ascends Paul's arm. The people believe that Paul is being punished—but when he is unharmed by the snake's poisonous bite he is proven good. Paul's survival of the bite can be seen as fulfilling the prophetic assurance of God’s protection over His apostles as they spread the gospel.

Westall's work in the late 18th century, encouraged by his chief patron, the taste-maker Richard Payne Knight, was innovative in helping to elevate the medium of watercolour closer to that of oil paintings. He used an intensity of colour and detail at a smaller, cheaper scale that appealed greatly to the market, and in 1795 Westall was pronounced in The St James’s Chronicle as 'the Founder of a particular School of Drawing in Water-Colours'.

Westall was a prolific book illustrator of both fiction and poetry. His commissions included works for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery and for Henry Fuseli's Milton Gallery, as well as illustrations to the works of Sir Walter Scott, Oliver Goldsmith, William Cowper, Thomas Gray and Byron. Byron greatly admired his work, stating of his illustrations that 'the brush has beat the poetry'; Westall painted several portraits of Byron.
