> Indian Company Paintings

Indian Company paintings are an enduring record of a particular time in Indian history, when the tastes of Western patrons (particularly those of the British East India Company) were influencing Indian artists. Traditional elements from Rajput and Mughal painting were given a more 'western' appearance through use of perspective and rounded modelling, resulting in a unique hybrid style. These vibrant paintings typically depict an array of lively scenes from Indian life, elegantly dressed Mughal gentlemen and elaborately decorated ladies, as well as architectural elevations and detail of local flora and fauna.
