An original c.1831 pen & ink drawing – Microcalligraphy Lord's Prayer in Roundel.
An exquisite example of breathtaking microcalligraphy—miniscule handwriting composed within a circular laurel wreath design.
Microcalligraphy emerged in the 9th century as a way of decorating Hebrew Bibles. Slowly the practice spread from Israel to Egypt and into Europe; by the 19th century it was a popular artform, particularly in relation to biblical subjects.
The writing within this example is only legible under magnification. The full Lord's Prayer—seventeen lines of script—fits within a circle of just 11mm (less than 1/2 inch) diameter.
