An original late 19th-century pastel drawing, Alfred Vevier de Poncy, Lion & Lioness.

A wonderful picture by Alfred Vevier de Poncy (fl.1871–1890), executed in an unusual combination of pastel and black ink. Dating from the late 19th-century, it is strikingly modern for its time. The nuzzling pose of the lion and lioness merging into the deep black surround makes for a powerful yet tender image.

Alfred Vevier de Poncy was a painter of landscape and genre scenes, who exhibited 1871–90 at the Royal Academy and 1877–90 at Suffolk Street. Born in France, he later lived in Balham, South London.

In pastel and ink, with areas of gum arabic to intensify the black. On artist's board.
