A delicate monogrammed watercolour painting by Frederick George Reynolds Senior (1828—1921) showing the cliffs at Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight, with two figures in the foreground. The chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay are among the most picturesque on the Isle of Wight: at the time that this picture was made, smugglers were still using the caves around the bottom of the chalk cliffs that are exposed at low tide.

Frederick George Reynolds Senior (1828–1921)

Frederick George Reynolds Senior (1828–1921) was an accomplished English watercolourist, and regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. It is rumoured that the family was descended from the great English portrait painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds. This work is one of a pair we have for sale, which showcase Reynolds’s sensitive treatment of the English landscape pre-urbanisation. Many of his paintings show parts of London—including Highgate, Hampstead Heath, Southgate, Hornsey, Hackney and Richmond Park—at a time when these areas were predominantly rural. Reynolds renders the abundant vegetation with immense detail, in a subtle palette of a multitude of greens.
