An original early 19th-century pen & ink drawing – Maria Vereker Viscountess Gort, Evening at a Boarding-House in America.
A delightful drawing from the Irish aristocratic O'Grady / Vereker family.
The artist is Maria O'Grady (1791–1854), daughter of Standish O'Grady, 1st Viscount Guillamore and Katharine Waller. In 1842 she married John Prendergast Vereker, 3rd Viscount Gort (1790–1865), from which time she was styled Viscountess Gort.
This drawing shows a scene from Frances Trollope's satirical, critically acclaimed yet controversial travelogue, 'Domestic Manners of the Americans' (1832), documenting her travels in the United States.
This drawing is one of a fascinating collection of works that we have for sale connected with the aristocratic O'Grady and Vereker families of 19th-century Ireland.
In brown ink and wash. On cream paper laid down on brown backing paper.
