An original c.1915 pen & ink drawing – Pickford Robert Waller, Decorative Art Nouveau Design in Red.
A stylish decorative design by distinguished designer and collector Pickford Robert Waller (1849–1930).
Waller was a leading member of the Aesthetic Movement, which championed 'art for art's sake,' emphasising the sensual qualities of art and design rather than any practical, moral or narrative purpose.
He is best known as a prolific designer of books and bookplates or 'ex libris'. The design forms part of a larger collection of works by Waller that we have for sale. Other studies in our collection show the range of natural figurative subjects that inspired—and directly translate into—Waller's stylised, organic designs, including flowers, feathers, birds and waves.
In coloured ink on wove paper.
Note that there is an additional study on the verso of the paper.
Please note the small size of this artwork.
