An original 1833 watercolour painting – R.J. Blesard, Haunting at Bolling Hall, Yorkshire 'Pity Poor Bradford'.
A beautiful, intensely coloured watercolour showing the artist's penchant for dramatic and darkly Gothic subjects of emotional intensity. The supernatural scene illustrates the famous 17th-century haunting at Bolling Hall in Bradford during the English Civil War. Legend has it that the Royalist Earl of Newcastle was visited by a ghost in the night whilst staying in the blue room at Bolling Hall while planning to attack and destroy the town of Bradford. The spectral figure pleaded 'Pity poor Bradford!', and thereby convinced him to spare the townspeople, only attacking those who resisted.
The artist is believed to be Robert John Blesard (1809–1839) of Woodhouse, Leeds, son of a woollen merchant and descendent of the prominent Quaker Blesard family of Guiseley. [See also collection R.J. Blesard: Yorkshire Landscapes 1832–34.]
