A vivid, intensely coloured pair of sheets illustrating the 1898 play by Anthony Hope, The Adventure of Lady Ursula.
Dating from around 1898, this painting forms part of a collection that we have for sale by V. Downes depicting Shakespearean subjects. The works demonstrate a Pre-Raphaelite sensibility, drawing on the emotional and moral complexity of Shakespeare and rendering the scenes with sumptuous detail and a jewel-like palette.
The second sheet has the illustration drawn on card and carefully cut out and pasted on to the sheet of paper.
