E.M. Larzarus, Spanish Mandolin Player – late 19th-century watercolour painting

An original late 19th-century watercolour painting, E.M. Larzarus, Spanish Mandolin Player.

This impressive large watercolour depicts a Don Juan or Don Giovanni-type character playing the mandolin. The figure's stance against the stone wall and his upward gaze indicate that he is serenading a woman at a window above; the nobleman's ornate clothing, the decorative architecture and the loose style of paint application all contribute to the painting's sense of romance.

The romantic and chivalrous literary-historical subject and the palette of russet oranges and turquoise-blues evokes the work of late Pre-Raphaelites such as Evelyn de Morgan and John William Waterhouse.

On watercolour paper.

All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.

Condition: Overall in good condition for its age. The far edges of the paper have some glue residue from previous mounting, with small patches of abrasion to the lower edge, which would be covered when mounted. Also three tiny worm holes at the upper right edge and two further worm holes at the lower left corner, which would be covered by a mount. There is a vertical crease line in the paper towards the right of the figure, which is not especially noticeable. Some age toning to the paper is visible on the verso. Please see photos for detail.
