Ellis Drawing Room, Jacobean House, Elstree

An original 19th-century watercolour painting, Ellis, Drawing Room, Jacobean House, Elstree.

An stunning watercolour painting of an interior drawing room of a grand Jacobean house. The artist has meticulously recorded details of the interior—including the ornate carved fireplace and decorative plasterwork ceiling—whilst also giving a sense of the room as a lived-in, breathing space—with fire burning and food set casually on the table. An inscription verso indicates the location of Elstree in Hertfordshire but we have been unable to identify the house—could it be the 16th-century Elstree Hall, demolished in 1881? Scratching out has been used to create highlights, to the carpet, chairs and table.
