Henry Somers Kortright The Wharfe

An original early 20th-century oil painting, Henry Somers Kortright, The Wharfe.

A lovely impressionistic oil painting by Henry Somers Kortright (1870–1942), likely dating from around the 1910s.

Kortright was a prolific landscape and portrait painter who exhibited at major galleries. Born in Southampton, he studied at Lambeth School of Art and Herkomers, Bushy, Hertfordshire. He married Primrose Margaret Harvey, who is listed as a miniature painter. They lived at Grenville Lodge, Bexhill-on-Sea, and had three children. Their youngest, Nicholas Henry, was killed serving with the RAF during the Second World War aged just nineteen.

Kortright exhibited at the Royal Academy and with the Royal Society of British Artists, at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Royal Society of Artists Birmingham and Walker Gallery of Liverpool amongst others. His works can be found in the collections of the Royal Collection, Bexhill Museum, Bushey Museum & Art Gallery, and Bank of England Museum.

The framer's label verso on the back of the painting, James Bourlet & Sons Ltd (dating from between 1864 and 1974) certainly has significant age. The artist's address on the back is 37 De La Warr Road, Bexhill; Kortright is residing at this address in the 1910–31 Bexhill Directory.
