Barker, Frere & Williams: Norfolk Drawings

This picture forms part of a collection of works that we have for sale related to the interconnected families of Frere, Barker and Williams of Norfolk. There are works bearing these surnames and the locations depicted centre around the Norfolk coast and Great Yarmouth.

In the 18th century, Sheppard Frere of Roydon Hall, Norfolk, had a son, Edward, who married Mary, daughter of John Barker, of Shropham Hall, Norfolk. Their son, Edward Barker Frere, married Elizabeth, daughter of John Hanbury Williams, a merchant of Great Yarmouth. They subsequently had a son, Edward Hanbury Frere, Rector of Horham, Suffolk, who married Ellen, daughter of John Taylor Allen, Vicar of Stradbroke, Suffolk.

The collection comprises particularly charming works in graphite. Artists include the architect Augustus Frere and the artist Margaret Hanbury Frere (1866–1956), as well as 'G. Lucas – the celebrated engraver' and 'Rev R.C. Jolly, some time tutor to Prince Alfred'.
