An original early 19th-century gouache painting, Italian School, Quartiere dei Soldati, Pompeii, Italy.
An exquisite Italian veduta, hand-painted in brilliant gouache. The view shows the Quartiere dei Soldati—Soldiers' Quarters— in Pompeii. Since its excavation in the 18th century, there has been some debate over the use of this space. Originally being considered barracks for soldiers, it was briefly thought to be a market square, before opinion being settled on it being the site of a Gladiator School. The weapons found at the site were consistent with gladiatorial combat and graffiti discovered on the walls was gladiatorial in subject.
This picture was produced in the early 19th century by an anonymous Italian artist for the Grand Tour souvenir market.
On cream wove paper with narrow hand-painted black border.
