Lake District Drawings c.1818–1830

This intriguing and attractive collection of drawings relate to the Lake District in the early 19th century. The artist's initials appear to be J.W.; some of the drawings are on watermarked 1818 paper, others are dated 1829 to 1831. Many of the subjects are Lake District views, and there are inscriptions of Cumbria locations 'Newbiggin' and 'Castle Sowerby, Sowerby Hall'. The artist was potentially connected with the clergy: Newbiggin Hall was a friar's retreat in the 19th century and Sowerby Hall was the vicarage to the nearby Castle Sowerby Church. There are also potential connections to London: one drawing is inscribed St John's Gate, and another accompanying inscription reads Fenchurch Street.

The collection also includes subjects after James Duffield Harding (1798–1863)—who was a distinguished and highly influential teacher of landscape drawing and author of drawing manuals—and biblical subjects after Rubens. The Lake District drawings, however, have a feel of spontaneity, capturing dramatic vantage points or moments of sunlight or fleeting clouds.

The watercolours bear a similarity to the work of amateur artist Rev Joseph Wilkinson (1765–1831) who was on the fringes of Wordsworth's life and lived at the ‘Great Hall’ at Ormathwaite. Wilkinson's Lake District subjects date from around the end of the 18th century, however, as he moved to Norfolk around 1803–4. Another local landowner and clergyman was John Watson, rector of Castle Carrock 1828–9 and perpetual curate of Cumrew 1828–66, but there is no record for him of any artistic practice.
