German School Hand-Embroidery on Silk, Violet Flowers
An original c.1810 mixed media – German School, Hand-Embroidery on Silk, Violet Flowers.
A beautiful small German friendship embroidery dating from the beginning of the 19th century. This is one of a charming group of works incorporating Romantic and Neoclassical themes, produced by various hands for a young woman named Louise. This was possibly the artist Louise Purgold (1782–1848) of Gotha, who married the archaeologist and art historian Emil Braun (1809–1856).
Hand-embroidered on silk, stitched onto a paper backing.
