An original mid-19th-century gouache painting – Harriet Elizabeth Stamer Duchess de Rovigo, Lough Cutra Castle (Lough Cooter), Galway, Ireland.
A delightful miniature painting from the Irish aristocratic O'Grady / Vereker family.
Lough Cutra Castle in Co. Galway was the seat of Col Charles Vereker, 2nd Viscount Gort. Vereker instructed the architect John Nash to design him a home on the banks of the loch after visiting Nash's East Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight. (By a strange turn of events, East Cowes Castle came into the ownership of the Gort family, when Charles's son, John Prendergast Vereker, 3rd Viscount Gort, acquired it by marrying Elizabeth Tudor in 1861.)
This miniature in gouache is painted by Harriet Elizabeth Stamer (1816–1875), a member of the wider O'Grady / Vereker family. In 1839 she married the French Duke de Rovigo, becoming the Duchess of Rovigo. Around 1850 she returned to Ireland from France to live with her mother at Carnelly.
This drawing is one of a fascinating collection of works that we have for sale connected with the aristocratic O'Grady and Vereker families of 19th-century Ireland.
The card has been historically cut to an oval.
