Best known as a book illustrator, Devon artist Cecil ‘Mogs’ Elgee (1904–1984) studied at Bombay School of Art in India before returning to her native Budleigh Salterton in 1927 and attending at Exeter School of Art. She is well regarded for her paintings of animals and for her illustrations in the book ‘Costumes and Characters in the Days of the British Raj’ published in 1982.
