An original 1857 watercolour painting, Emma Petit, Chambéry Cathedral, Savoie, France.
This attractive watercolour is by Emma Petit, the sister of the artist Reverend John Louis Petit (1801–1868). Emma sometimes accompanied her brother on his travels, as did their other sisters, most frequently Maria Katherine (later Jelf) and Elizabeth (later Haig).
Rev John Louis Petit was an English artist who was painting in an impressionistic style decades before French Impressionists. Petit is considered a 'forgotten master' and his innovation has led to recent comparisons with the work of J.M.W. Turner.
In watercolour with graphite underdrawing. On watercolour paper.
