An original early 19th-century pen & ink drawing, Hoppner, Horse Battle with Spears.
A lovely little sketch, ascribed on the back to 'the son (of the celebrated Hoppner, a painter of great talents in London) when about 14 years old at Thurstead'.
The 'celebrated Hoppner' refers to the portrait painter John Hoppner RA (1758–1810). Hoppner had three sons, two of whom are described as artists: Richard Belgrave Hoppner (1786–1872), British Consul general, Venice, and friend of Byron; Wilson (sometimes known as William) Lascelles Hoppner (1788-?), artist, and Henry Parkyns Hoppner (1795–1833), officer of the Royal Navy, Arctic explorer, draughtsman/artist.
