An original Indian Company School gouache painting c.1850 – Travelling in Palanquin.

A fantastically vivid Indian gouache painting on transparent mica, produced in South India at Trichinopoly or Tanjore around 1850.

This painting forms part of a superb set of mica paintings housed within their original paper album. The collection comprises particularly fine, detailed and varied scenes, including ceremonies and festivities, travel by carriage and palanquin, trades and occupations.

Indian Company paintings on mica are rare; it is estimated that as of now, there are only around 7,000 mica paintings available in the world.

The mica is loosely mounted to the album backing paper with corner slits rather than adhesive, so it can be completely removed.

Inscribed below in English giving the title: 'Travelling in Palanquin with Cavady Cooly'.

Condition: Colours are vivid and strong. Loss to the mica at the upper right corner as shown. Small amount of flaked paint to the lower edge.
