An original mid-19th-century watercolour painting Ox Tower (Ochsenturm), Oberwesel, Rhine.
A vivid watercolour with touches of white bodycolour, showing the Ox Tower at Oberwesel on the banks of the Rhine. The medieval tower is one of the sixteen surviving defensive towers that make up the town wall at Oberwesel. It is crenellated with an octagonal top tower, making it a type of butter-churn tower (Butterfassturm). A deftly painted sailboat on the water in the foreground provides a grand sense of scale.
