An original 1832 watercolour painting – R.J. Blesard, Glencoe, Scotland from Sketch by Alphonse Dousseau.
A superb watercolour, darkly brooding with Romantic imaginative sensibility.
The artist is believed to be Robert John Blesard (1809–1839) of Woodhouse, Leeds, son of a woollen merchant and descendent of the prominent Quaker Blesard family of Guiseley. This Scottish view is described as being 'From a sketch made on the spot' in 1829 by the French artist Alphonse Dousseau (1796–1876). In the 1820s Dousseau settled in Leeds where he ran a school of art. He undertook extensive tours of Britain and Ireland. Blesard undoubtedly encountered Dousseau's work because of the Leeds connection.
In watercolour with scratching out to denote the driving rain. On watermarked J Whatman wove paper.
