Rosemary Carr ROI Abbey Mills at Sunrise
An original 1971 oil painting, Rosemary Carr ROI, Abbey Mills at Sunrise.
A beautiful large work in oil on paper by Rosemary Carr ROI (b.1932). The subject is Abbey Mills, possibly Darley Abbey Mills on the River Derwent. But more important than the specific location is the evocation of atmosphere and the effects of light. The glowing the sun and impressionistic surrounding landscape perhaps reference Monet's Impression, Sunrise, the painting that is credited with inspiring the name of the Impressionist movement. Carr's painting uses the effects of nature to turn its industrial subject into a transcendent vision of feeling and beauty.
In oil paint with palette knife on paper. Carr often painted with a palette knife; here the resultant effect is lively mark-making and slight impasto to the paint.
