Edwin Hayes Portrait of Thomas Francis Meagher
An original mid-19th-century photograph – Edwin Hayes, Portrait of Thomas Francis Meagher.
An interesting photograph produced by W. Lawrence of Sackville street, Dublin, after a portrait by the Irish artist Edwin Hayes. The portrait depicts the Irish nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders Thomas F. Meagher (1823–1867).
This photograph forms part of our Irish aristocratic O'Grady / Vereker collection. The head of the O'Grady family was the barrister Standish O'Grady, 1st Viscount Guillamore (1766–1840), who in 1803 had led the prosecution of Robert Emmet's Irish republican rebellion. Charles Vereker, 2nd Viscount Gort, however, was amongst the most active opponents of the Union, opposing the act in 1800.
On photographic paper laid down on card mount.
