An original 20th-century gouache painting – Indian Company School Style, A Nobleman Entertained by Nautch Girls & Musicians.
This intensely vivid scene appears to be after a Patna School composition by the artist Siva Lal (c.1817–1887), who worked alongside his cousin Siva Dayal Lal. The artists were prominent in the city and relied to a great extent on the patronage of the local gentry. Versions of the composition are in the collection of the V&A (no.IS.201-1949) and British Museum (no.1989,0415,0.1).
The present version is meticulously rendered in opaque gouache. The painting is executed on a sheet of Mughal manuscript paper, with extensive handwritten Persian text on the verso. There also appears to be an illustration on the recto under the image that has been painted over.
