Page's Bridge

Page's Bridge

From our William Page collection, this drawing in brown wash has us scratching our heads as to the location. The sweeping line of the bridge resembles the artist's view near Tivoli (image 2, Courtesy of LM Library), but the overall composition also echoes Joseph Farington's Brathay Bridge, Cumbria (image 3, Yale Center for British Art).

There is a lovely abbey ruin sketch in the collection too—is this Malmesbury Abbey with shelter for pigs?

And the plot thickens with a watercolour copy after a sketch by Page in the British Museum (images 6 and 7) which is inscribed 'Mrs. C.J.'. The BM original by Page is part of a group of works related to a pupil, Harriet Pemberton. So perhaps the drawings in our collection were owned by another pupil—and offer interesting insight into Page's role as a teacher.

Lots of head scratching. A group certainly warranting further investigation.
