An interesting early view of Edward Eliot's Road in Madras (now Chennai), India in 1916. This is one of three views in Madras by the same hand (see stock numbers KD-049 and KD-053).

Late-Edwardian Sketches: SS Golconda, India & Burma

This is one of a group of stylish works dating from the late Edwardian / Pre-World War One period, collected by a Walter E. Good (1911–1918). Some of the drawings were executed onboard SS Golconda, a British India Line service from London to Calcutta, whilst others were sketched at Madras and in Burma. The pictures embody the humour and aesthetic of a time of modernisation and social change in Britain, which was in conflict and tension with lingering traditions and class structures from the 19th century.
