An original c.1816 watercolour painting – Carolina O.C. Morton after William Daniell, Ruins of the Hindu Temples at Brambanan, Java, Indonesia.
An interesting subject painted by Carolina Olivia Clara Morton (1785–1826) after an William Daniell's engraving ‘The large temple at Brambanan’, published in The History of Java of 1817. The Hindu temple is shown overgrown with foliage, presented by Daniell as an exotic picturesque subject.
Carolina was the wife of the Irish missionary William Morton, at Chinsurah, India (married 1815). William Morton published a Bengali dictionary and translated biblical texts into Bengali in the 1820s and 1830s. He also served as Professor and Chaplain of Calcutta Grammar-School.
The corners of the paper are clipped as shown. On watermarked 1816 paper.
