Attrib. Richard Doyle Demon Escaping on Horseback
An original mid-19th-century pen & ink drawing, Attrib. Richard Doyle, Demon Escaping on Horseback.
This brilliant fantastical ink drawing shows a winged demon riding a galloping horse, travelling at full tilt away from church-like buildings and angel-like forms.
The style and subject of the drawing are very like that of the Victorian illustrator Richard Doyle (1824–1883). Doyle featured galloping horses in a number of his fantastical subjects and the horse in the present drawing is extremely similar to that in a drawing by Doyle titled 'The Knight Pursued by Sprites'. It can also be compared to a Comic Sketch of a Man on Horseback in the Morgan Library & Museum (no. 1986.2548) and a drawing for 'A Book Full of Nonsense' in the V&A (no. E.458:10-1976).
