An original early 20th-century watercolour painting, Conrad H.R. Carelli BWS, Valley of El Leja, Palestine.
This dramatic watercolour by Conrad Hector Raphael Carelli (1869–1956) depicts a steep and narrow gorge in Palestine, with an ancient cave evident in the rocks and figure atop the grassy outcrop. The painting exemplifies Carelli's loose brushwork and sensitive use of colour to capture the feeling of a place. Conrad Carelli travelled extensively; a similarly sized watercolour entitled 'The Dead Sea & mountains of Moab from Jericho' is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
