Landscape Watercolours: E. Bosanquet (1863–1928)

This is one of a collection of watercolours that we have for sale by Emily Mary Edith Bosanquet. Emily and her husband Charles resided at Blackheath in London (formerly Kent). Many of the subjects in collection are Kent locations, including substantial local houses visited by the Bosanquets. There are also picturesque subjects in Yorkshire and coastal views in Norfolk and on the Isle of Wight, as well as further afield in the Italian and Swiss Lakes—all typical holiday destinations for the Edwardian traveller.

The Bosanquet family seat was originally Forest House, on the outskirts of Epping Forest in Essex. From 1801, Samuel Bosanquet (1744–1806), Governor of the Bank of England, purchased the Dingestow Court estate near Monmouth, beginning a long association between the family and the Monmouthshire area.

Emily Mary Edith was the daughter of John Lloyd (Rector of Llanvapley in Monmouthshire, Wales) and Emily Letitia Bosanquet. Her grandfather was the barrister and philanthropist Samuel Richard Bosanquet (1800–1882), who was known as a writer on legal, social and theological topics. Not only was Emily a Bosanquet on her mother's side, she also married a Bosanquet—Charles John Bosanquet (b.1864), nephew to Samuel Richard Bosanquet.

Other members of the family included Admiral Sir Day Hort Bosanquet (1843–1923) and the philosopher and political theorist Bernard Bosanquet (1848–1923). A branch of the family also settled at Rock Hall in Northumberland.
