Émile Antoine Bayard Rosine from 'The Barber of Seville'

An original 1876 watercolour painting, Émile Bayard, Rosine from 'The Barber of Seville'.

A fantastic original watercolour by the French illustrator Émile-Antoine Bayard (1837–1891), showing the character of Rosine, the heroine from 'The Barber of Seville'—the play by Pierre Beaumarchais (1732–1799), which was immortalised in Rossini's opera of 1816.

This illustration was one of a series by Bayard reproduced as engravings in the 'Complete works of Beaumarchais', published in Paris in 1876. Bayard is most famous for his iconic illustrations for Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. Most notably, his image of the young Cosette sweeping has become emblematic of the entire story and has been used in promotional art for various versions of the musical.
