Ethel Sophia Cheeswright Cliff View, Sark
An original early 20th-century watercolour painting, Ethel Sophia Cheeswright, Cliff View, Sark.
A superb coastal view on the island of Sark in the Channel Islands by renowned Sark artist Ethel Sophia Cheeswright (1874–1977). As was typical, Cheeswright paints expressively in watercolour, with deft graphite underdrawing bringing definition to her loose forms.
The island of Sark, in the southwestern English Channel off the coast of Normandy, France, is known as the jewel of the Channel Islands. It is one of the few remaining places in the world where cars are banned from roads and only tractors, bicycles and horse-drawn vehicles are permitted. Cheeswright, who moved to the island in 1892, celebrates this gentle unspoilt beauty in her art.
