An original mid-19th-century watercolour painting, Frederick William Hulme, Farmstead Barns with Peasant Woman.
A beautiful watercolour by landscape painter and illustrator Frederick William Hulme (1816–1884).
The rustic subject exemplifies the nostalgia that was felt for country life during the increasing urbanisation of the 19th century. The style of the painting, however, has a fresh, modern quality that belies its age, through the crisp and precise application of watercolour in flat blocks of wash. The figure of the peasant woman is deftly added with touches of white bodycolour. There is additional line detail in graphite in places.
On buff-coloured paper.
