An original late 19th-century watercolour painting, T. Heron, Rowboat Towing Spars, Sandquay, Dartmouth.

An interesting late-Victorian watercolour showing a rowboat towing spars, used in the rigging of a sailing vessel. In larger vessels during the age of sail, spare spars could be roped together to provide a temporary surface known as a 'spar deck'.

Late-Victorian Watercolours: T. Heron

This appealing painting forms part of a collection of pictures that we have for sale by a T. Heron dating from the late 1800s. The collection features very typical Victorian subjects, such as informal familial portraits, landscape beauty spots, local fishing industry, botanical subjects, birds and animals. Their soft, often sepia, colouring and considered composition make them charming examples of amateur watercolour practice in the 19th century.
