An original mid-20th-century gouache painting Theatrical Ladies with Bird Cage.
An expressive and vivacious portrait composition in black ink and vivid gouache. The iconography of the caged bird has long been used to symbolise the respectable love of marriage, but the exuberance of the women's costumes and theatrically draped curtains creates an opposing tension. A further ink sketch on a fold in the paper shows a woman resembling a more provocatively dressed dancing girl.
On watermarked 'semi-absorbent' wove paper.
