William James Müller Shepherd on a Country Path

An original early 19th-century watercolour painting, William James Müller, Shepherd on a Country Path.

A very attractive small watercolour attributed to William James Müller (1812–1845), the best-known artist of the Bristol school. Müller's early pictures were mostly of the scenery of Gloucestershire and Wales. His landscape style was strongly influenced by his study of masters such as Claude and Ruysdael. Here, the tall trees and soft foliage provide an exquisite framing device as the eye is drawn along the country path with its herdsman and animals. A flash of red clothing anchors the composition in the centre.
